Whats the difference for SLR cameras between a macro lens and a prime lens? I have the new Canon XT1i? - new slr cameras

I have the new Canon Xt1i and the need for macro pictures around food, insects, flowers, etc.

Macro lenses are very large.

Prime lenses are lenses that only one focal length (eg 50 mm or 300 mm, etc.), no zoom. They are often better than the variable zoom.

All macro lens (but only a handful) are cousins. The most popular are (in the last forty years, anyway) were in the focal lengths of 50 mm, 55 mm, 60 mm, 65 mm, 100 mm, 105 mm, 180 mm and 200 mm.
